SAFE (Saving Antiquities For Everyone) is a coalition of professionals from communications, media and advertising working together with experts in the academic and museum communities.

Our mission is to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving cultural antiquities worldwide. SAFE was founded in response to the ransacking of the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad on April 10-12, 2003. Sadly, the looting in Iraq continues, extending to numerous archaeological sites near ancient cities in the region, such as Babylon, Isin, Ninevah, Hatra and Larsa.

Among advisors from the academic and museum worlds we are working with are Dr. Francis Deblauwe of the 2003 Iraq War & Archaeology and the Baghdad Museum Projects, Dr. Patty Gerstenblith of the Cultural Heritage Law Program of DePaul University, Drs. Gil Stein and McGuire Gibson from the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, Dr. John Malcolm Russell, Deputy Senior Advisor, Ministry of Culture, Coalition Provisional Authority, Dr. Nancy Wilkie, of Carleton College, former President of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), and Dr. Richard L. Zettler of the University of Pennsylvania Museum. .

SAFE has no political or commercial affiliations. We are a nonprofit volunteer organization. Our agenda is simple: to use the global focus of attention on the tragedy in Iraq to address the ongoing worldwide problem of vandals and looters robbing us of our collective heritage.

We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who have given up their evenings and weekends to work on SAFE. In creating this website, we are particularly indebted to the following individuals for their contributions: Jennifer Deseo and David van Fossen for editorial assistance; Paul Kunkel for input and editorial advice; Cynthia Bates and Caroline Puzinas for invaluable ideas; Chuck Skorupski for general coordination; and Carolyn Dodge for web development.

SAFE is being sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts, a 501(c)(3) corporation; under Internal Revenue Service regulations it qualifies as tax-exempt. Any contributions of cash, securities, or materials made to the Foundation on behalf of SAFE are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by the law.
