Due to the current lack of legitimate government in Iraq, this legislation is urgently needed to close
the loophole in the existing law against the importation into the United States
of any archaeological or cultural material from Iraq on or after August 2, 1990,
without appropriate documentation.
H.R. 2009 will not only cut off the flow of looted antiquities into the U.S., it will also aid the return of these materials by authorizing their seizure and forfeiture. Furthermore, it gives the President of the United States the ability to respond quickly to other emergency situations in the future. This is something you can do RIGHT NOW. Show your support to H.R. 2009 and urge your representative to be a co-sponsor of the bill by clicking http://www.house.gov/writerep/ and tell everyone you know to do the same. You can download this poster, distribute it and post it wherever you can. The goal is to get as many people as possible to write in their support. We need your help to ensure that every American knows about H.R. 2009. On Monday, September 29, 2003, students from across the country will join SAFE in a poster hanging campaign. You can support us in this effort by downloading the poster and hanging copies of it in hallways, bookstores, bulletin boards, cafeterias, wherever the public can see them. Tell your friends and colleagues about SAFE Poster Hanging Day, and organize your own Poster Hanging Party. And please, tell us about your experiences. Write to us. We would like to hear from you. If you need hard copies of the poster, contact us. Whether you are a scholar, archaeologist, museum curator, educator, media specialist, publicist, agency head, creative director, art director, copywriter, or simply someone who’s concerned, we invite you to participate in our projects or send in any other ideas or suggestions. We are seeking volunteers as project directors, planners, researchers, coordinators, as well as administrative assistants. Together we can create a global public awareness campaign. Let’s use the power of words and images to help stop the illegal antiquities trade. |
